There IS a way to still get to the old status messages btw, but it's not obvious or very efficient. Some views in the admin console - such as the Activity logs - still have links to the original issue A as a separate page. Even though the public URL for issue A just redirects to issue B now, the *admin* URL for issue A still gets you the original page with all the status updates intact (though it looks like any image attachments from users are missing). You'll see a note at the top of the admin view linking to the suggestion it has been merged into, but afaik that original page will continue to be accessible indefinitely.
